What is the Value of philosophy?

Travis Sherrock: Philosophy is the avid study of wisdom. Its value is in the study, but more so in the application of the wisdom one obtains. What do we mean when we say something has value? It means, "this can be used this way, to meet some desire, or need." The more valuable a thing is the more it satisfies the human needs or appetites. Wisdom satisfies the appetite which is dully called curiosity.

Caterina Yeargan: I think you can fall in love infinite amount of times, but there is that one person that you know you will always be in love with.

Jene Licausi: Knowledge isn't inherently useful or dangerous; what is important is how you apply that knowledgeCase in point: you could spend time and energy developing a powerful bomb, or spend it developing a powerful energy resource societies can use (like electricity).

Boyce Gilhooly: Philosophy has to happen before we do anything

Dick Ovdenk: Anything can be dangerous, but ignorance is the most danger! ous. Without our knowledge we'd still be living in trees. And there are those who want us all to live like that now by destroying knowledge.

Talisha Digrande: anything can be dangerous in the hands of a certain type of person who knows how to unleash their damaging abilities. even a piece of paper can be used to write horrid things or used as kindling to burn somebody alive in the hands of somebody who wants to use it to do harm. so while most of us take the knowledge that gas burns the majority of us would never use it to harm anyone but that knowledge to some people is all they need. knowledge is power and as such has a great potential to be abused as much as it does for being used for good things....Show more

Arnulfo Seegars: Knowledge isn't dangerous. Evil people are.

Bernadette Roel: People say love happens just once in life the rest is just attraction ? is it really ture. Cant we get the same feelings twice or more ?

Stanton Degregorio: Philos! ophy is how you live life. It is what guides your every actio! n. Whether it is acknowledged or not, every person lives by a philosophy. That is its value. Anyone who would say that it has no value just made a philosophical statement by saying so.

Jimmie Doerfler: Yes knowledge can be dangerous. Like that guy that invented the bomb. people today use bombs in war and stuff. These bombs kill people and other living things. Bombs are dangerous. Wouldn't it be better if we never knew how to make bombs? than so many people won't die of them. This is a example of how knowledge can be dangerous. So yes knowledge is dangerous. but in the same time knowledge is not dangerous. knowing how to created cures for cancer can save many people, medicine saves lives. So knowledge is both dangerous and not....Show more

Alecia Kaehler: A right philosophical mind has many good characters which are more necessary to all human kind.

Kip Ockenfels: Potentially, yes it can be. Obviously not all knowledge. But when considering that every ! bit of knowledge only opens up the pathway for more knowledge to pursue, it is easy to see how the universe and its content is heavily reduced to redundant abstract languaging. The universe becomes more and more artificial through the lens of perception.

Leann Villalta: The Value Of Philosophy

Whitley Leopold: I think of philosophy as the right to think freely rather than be controlled by religion, politics, race or social class.

Veta Slicker: Knowledge isn't dangerous. It is the people who wield that knowledge that make it dangerous. To know is good if you want information for the sake of expanding your understanding of the universe or life or whatever your need. It is bad if you use it to the detriment of others.

Esteban Faggett: I need three people to answer these sime three questions. I love philosophical topics and this one struck a cord with me because I have yet to make a rational argument for its existence. What is a personality/emotion? Wh! ere does a personality/emotion come from? How do you know that it isn't! something made up?The floor is open for debate...Show more

Sol Allphin: Critical thinking, having an opinion about things.

Mauro Cowee: Emotion is something you can feel within. It's also a reaction between chemicals within the brain. Emotions are caused by mental and physical stimuli. They're not made up because they can be directly observed. As for personality, it's the patterns in the way a person acts. Personality is thus variable within a person who changes those patterns. Since patterns are determined by statistics, a personality can never be non-existant within a person. Everyone has a personality. This statistical view of personality shows how it's impossible to have been made up since the statistics exist objectively. I feel like that's a pretty good argument for having just encountered that question for the first time and making it up on the spot....Show more

Rena Pepe: Of a great value. That is why God frequently & repeatedly commands to think ! & ponder. :)

Ayesha Genova: personal guidance system. Mine is 20 letters. "If it is to be, it is up to me"

Abby Herwood: NO. LACK of knowledge is dangerous.Frankenstein is fictional, but is the story of something dangerous that happened because the humans didnt have the right knowledge necessary to do what they were trying to do. If they had, frankenstein wouldnt have been a monster. Idk, maybe if I had read/seen it in its context at the time, but all it tells me is that we need to be careful with future research and find as much knowledge as we can before we attempt studies. It shows what happens when you arent careful enough with what you are doing - and thats true of anything. But yes, I guess I can see the whole "knowledge and science is dangerous" part of it. It would line up nicely with the motivations of the gov for the general public to be uneducated enough to know whats going on politically, financially, scientifically. I see it lining up nice! ly with the religious sentiment that authority should never be question! ed. Its fear mongering at its best in order to hold back scientific progress.Yes, humans need information and knowledge. Its what makes us productive, happy, creative. Its what gives us the ability to solve problems. Slaves never fought back until enough of them had been taught to read and write.Specifically speaking of the scientific pursuits you mentioned..... how is genetic enginering and stem cell research different from anti biotics and tylonal? Are there dangers and risks involved? ABSOLUTELY. So is there with tylonal and anti biotics. We are creating super bugs we cant fight. Hospitals are an infection bed of mrsa and vrse and several others. But no one questions the morality of anti biotics, or tylonal.I think people FEAR knowledge, and that fear is incredibly dangerous. Especially when the new knowledge challenges the person's foundational beliefs. Many people will even flat out ignore and refuse to see knowledge because they cant handle the challenge! to their foundational beliefs. Some of the religious fear that knowledge will ruin their religion or mean they are sinning since they arent just trusting it to god. Some fear it will give evidence against (or for) a god. Fear is dangerous. Knowledge makes things less dangerous.I agree with another comment, knowledge is power. And people CAN and DO misuse power. The knowledge itself is not dangerous, but what the person does with it....Show more

Eleni Mccier: Knowledge is not inherently good or bad. It just depends how a person decides to use that knowledge that makes it good or bad...

Tracy Huesso: Frankenstein is a chilling horror story about a green monster that rises from the dead. However, it was meant to offer much more to the human race than a mad scientist screaming, “it’s alive!” It is a lesson about the search for knowledge and the perils that accompany that pursuit. The prevailing theme in this gothic novel is that humans have! a bottomless, motivating, and often dangerous thirst for knowledge.Do ! you agree that knowledge can be dangerous? Think about our society today and our own longing to save, prolong, and manipulate life â€" for example, genetic engineering, stem cell research and cloning (just to name a few). Are these pursuits dangerous or a healthy desire to keep our loved ones healthy?...Show more

Keneth Mailhot: well philosophy is the love of wisdom.. so a value on wisdom would be priceless..

Leontine Kreitz: I think more knowledge can be dangerous for sure. Because If someone has knowledge in more extent then that person will not listen some other's advice..!!

Dorris Homola: Personality or emotion? It is the expression of an experience. Personality come from? From experience (or experiences) or the lack of information. If you wish me to go back further. In the womb the baby can hear the environment around itself. It can feel the tightening of the muscles of the mother and the relaxation of those muscles. The baby's oxygen is the mother'! s oxygen. Then there is the meshing of the DNA that is building the baby. Things that the mother and father learned is wound within their own experiences and woven into the DNA. The child is born knowing things then is hit the reality that they are impotent to the life around them. Their body is tiny, their effortless consumption of energy is cut off and not longer constant. They are not able to express themselves so others can understand. A new set of experiences build, change and build. So compromise begins. Between baby and the world and between baby and the parents (guardian, whatever). Who do you know if this is true? Experience....Show more
