Is this statement an accurate assessment of the "General Welfare" Clause in the Constitution?

Aldo Decurtis: The definition of welfare closest to the time the U.S. Constitution was written.welfare: exemption from any unusual evil or calamity; the enjoyment of peace and prosperity, or the ordinary blessings of society and civil government; applied to states.Promote: To forward; to advance; to contribute to the growth, enlargement or excellence of any thing valuable....Show more

Otto Lingafelt: "The founders were explicitly clear before, during, and after the Constitutional Convention that the term "General Welfare" specifically reiterated the enumerated powers given to the federal government by the people without relisting them."That's from mtlmnr49. Read some of his answers. This is only a portion of what he wrote. Here's the full answer:http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmUIj...Don't buy into Mr. Wolf's deceptive nonsense....Show more

Lissette Semon: Absolutely!!That's why it was never intended for the Federal Govt to do ANY of this ****!!S! uck it liberals!

Joel Feagler: Nope, and the same exaggerated claims could be made about the Common Defense clause. The Scary Government could declare martial law, put people in detainment camps, suspend the rights of free speech, assembly, and habeas corpus, conscript people to fight in wars in spite of the 13th amendment, except every single one of those has been done and no conservative has a problem with that part of the Constitution

Ronnie Sardi: Yep that is pretty much why it's "promote the general welfare". Promote is to be in favor for but not involved in. Of course all of this is moot as IQ's dropped in the Supreme Court over what the definition of promote is.

Kaley Lappas: Yes.Basically this is the way Liberals govern. In their view, unless it's specifically prohibited in the Constitution, it is permissible under the General Welfare clause. The 10th Amendment is only so much toilet paper to them....Show more

Lynn Mctier: NO. The General W! elfare was "the protection of citizens and a condition of tran! quility" Federalist papers.. It was not about redistribution of wealth (that is marxist) as the Dem's would have you believe. The General Welfare was freedom from the shackles of government..period. When man is allowed to produce and keep his profits the human condition improves. We have seen the direction a country will take when government "puts their boot on the neck" of enterprise....Show more
