Donte Hamme: You need to do a coarse in horticulture and a coarse in landscape construction ideally at night school your local college will advise on where you can do these coarses. One of the most important things is getting hands on experience with landscaping because college can only show you so much and physically doing it yourself counts for alot. This is what I have done and I've been in business for 23 yrs since I was 17 . http://www.gardensandlandscapes.co.uk

Kimberlee Bowdish: Check with your local cooperative extension. They have list of many plants that grow in your area. They also have a list of what they call invasive plants in your area. Your local vocational center may have a night class you can take for landscaping. You will learn a lot by doing. See if you can take a week end here and there to work with some one locally that does landscaping. There are acid soils and soils that need lime to reduce the acid et! c... You will need to learn these skills. There are some plants that are high acid plants and some that are low acid plants. You will also need to learn which is which....Show more
Heidy Fujikake: the best way to learn anything is to get a teacher...but a good place to start is the internet...just look up the plants and try it on your own yard.
Horace Escue: Some community colleges have courses. Cooperative Extension Service has their Master Gardener classes, but they have already begun for the season (but many states have their text books on line...a resourceful person could find them and study a bit). Garden centers have lectures throughout the year. Working full time makes it difficult to hire on with a business learning from the ground up, but it might be good to see if you really like the work. Universities have landscape horticulture programs which is not only plants/pests, but also soils, irrigation, engineering and either a specialized area like turf! grass management or greenhouse, nursery, orchards or design. ! The best thing you can study is business. 80% of businesses that fail is due to poor business planning and management. You have to know how to run a business, it's not a learn on the job situation, you won't be in one long enough to learn. You have to know how to write business plans, financing, taxes, responsibilities of meeting payroll, how to run crews. You cannot landscape by yourself, you will need help and equipment....Show more

If you enjoy the work, and make good choices, and have a natural affinity for landscaping / gardening, people will recognize it, and they will start asking you to come do their yards.Learning on our own dime is usually the very best preparation for moving into the world of business. People that want to be paid while they learn don't usually go very far....Show more
